As a little girl, I longed to ride the big horses that rode by our house in the subdivision. I would go out in the yard and watch people ride by now and again, but I was too shy to ask if I could pet them.
We moved to the country when I was 11, and I saw a horse running down the side of the highway. I was afraid she was going to get hit by a car; she was very frightened. I knew nothing about horses, but I loved animals of all types and I understood fear. I coaxed up to her and calmed her down, caught her using my jacket as a rope and found her home. Her owner taught me to ride and I haven't been off a horse since!
At the age of 13 we moved onto a cattle ranch, where I learned a lot about horses and riding. And at the age of 16, I began teaching preschool.
That's where it all began, this love of kids and horses together. I found that I loved sharing my horses with the little girls who can't have one. There's nothing like riding your horse around and seeing a shy, quiet little girl standing in a yard or a campground, staring with her great big eyes and you say, "would you like to pet the horse?" The excitement that lights up her eyes will stay with me all day! That's what we enjoy at our farm; watching the excitement on the faces of children as they experience and learn about the animals on our little farm.
In addition to the horses, many kids love to pet and learn about the chickens, alpacas, goats and bunnies. We, at Mountain High Farm, have learned that many people, young and old, are just like that little girl on the side of the road. They want to know how to raise chickens, milk a goat, or hold a bunny properly but they live in the city and have no opportunity to experience rural living.
Regardless of your age, we can help you experience the farm life at Mountain High Farm. We would be happy to give farm tours, set up our petting zoo, give pony rides, make a leather craft project, or provide birthday party fun! We even have a therapy miniature horse who can come indoors to visit those who are bed bound!
Whether it's an educational visit, with the focus on learning about a particular animal, or just for fun, we can taylor the visit to match your needs. You can learn how to care for the animals, the tricks to fencing and vet care, and how to farm on a budget.
A blog page with regular articles will be posted with tips on various animals and what's happening on our farm.
